Poetry Slam / Live Music

Thursday Night we all went to the rooftop bar at Happy Hippo where Bruce from Township Vibes Tours organized a Peotry Slam combined with some live performences by King and Mbijana.

We heard them before at our Trip to the Townships. This CD is also one of our favourites... which was recorded in Belgium by the way.

King & Mbijana were the two who also welcomed us on our First day at the DUT. Don't miss the change to check them out in Facebook or Youtube ;)

Weekend Trip - Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park / St. Lucia

So, last weekend we spend two nights at the Isinkwe Backpackers Bushcamp,
it was literally deep in the bush but very authentic and nice as you can see on the following pictures. And when you are having dinner at the pool you can also watch the bush babies get fed.
"Right next door" you can pet some wild animals like the cheetah and get your new facebook profil picture taken. ;-)

The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi-Park is located 280km north of Durban, it is the oldest Nationalpark in Africa. it covers an area of 960 km² in KwaZulu-Natal.

We went to the Hluhluwe Gamereserve quite early in expectation to see the Lion and Leopard. Unfortunately those two remained hidden in the bushes. But we got to see the other three of the BIG FIVE.
As you can see above we got very close to the rhinos... some elephants where wandering around not too far from us as well...

The following days we drove all the way to St. Lucia to see some Hippos and Crocodiles...
There we stayed for two nights until Jenny and I got back to Durban by Minibus whereas Paddy & Sandy continued their journey up to Mozambique.

Sharks Board KwaZulu-Natal

www.shark.co.za

Before the dissection

This morning we went on an exhibition to the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.
Which was very interessting and educational. Three local pre-schools attened as well and it was fun to see how the kids were responding to the amusing presentation from one of the Shark Board Members.
First we got to see an audiovisual presentation, which was very informative about sharks in general and the shark saftey gear. An approx. 350km shark net along the coast protects bathers from shark attacks. The shark nets do not form a barrier, or shark fence though. Instead, the nets act like fishing decives - by fishing for sharks that come close to the protected beaches. This reduces the chance of an encounter between a shark and a swimmer. They said there havn't been any shark attacks for 50 years now.
So it is quite safe for us to go swimming here in the ocean, unless you are bleeding or swim at night...
